Jerry knows that our nation’s public schools are in crisis. With too little funding, over-crowded classrooms, deteriorating buildings, and an inability to retain the best teachers, our children are simply not receiving the education they need or deserve. He is worried about cookie-cutter testing standards and about the prohibitive cost of higher education, which frequently saddles those lucky enough to go to college with decades of debt.
Jerry believes our students deserve productive, nurturing and safe educational environments and an affordable education for those continuing past high school.
He is a strong supporter of public school education, consistently receiving 100% ratings from the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. Throughout his congressional career, he has supported efforts to increase state, local and federal education funding, including measures to expand Head Start, repair crumbling schools, provide new textbooks, attract the best teachers, reduce class sizes and offer schools cutting-edge learning technologies.
In terms of particular local impact, Jerry has been responsible for bringing home significant federal monies to New York’s institutions of higher learning, for helping to confront and manage New York’s school overcrowding problems, and for working to remediate New York City's schools of dangerous PCB chemicals.
Members of New York's Congressional delegation want to make it easier for pregnant women in the workplace.
Representatives Jerrold Nadler of Manhattan and Brooklyn and Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Queens introduced the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act in Washington Tuesday.
If passed, it would require employers to make accommodations for workers who are pregnant, such as limiting physically strenuous aspects of a job.
Employers would be forbidden to force pregnant workers to take leave.
